Line 1: Line 1:
The general policy of WikIT is not to deal with mind mapping '''software''' (see [[Policies of WikIT#Policy_on_mind_mapping_software|Policies of WikIT]]) because this is first and foremost a wiki about information maps and visual aids to thinking.  It covers what they are, how to use them, which type to choose when, and how to make them.
+
[[Image:Uses-of-mindmapping.jpg|right|Uses of mind mapping]]
 +
This is a high-level view of the material in WikIT that covers different ways that all the types of information maps can be used - how to use them, which specific map types have advantages for which uses, tips and tricks.

But there are regular inquiries on Twitter and in forums about free mind mapping software, so to provide answers, InformationTamers have put together this list.  We built this article, with permission, using the most complete source for details of information mapping software on the Web: '''[http://www.mind-mapping.org/ Mind-mapping.org]'''.  Hat tip to Vic Gee who put Mind-mapping.org together and keeps it up to date.
+
----
 +
An important note on terminology: '''Most of the references below are to "mind maps" and WikIT adopts the [[Information_map_types#Common_mind_maps|prevalent use of this term]].'''   The Information Maps area of WikIT is intended to be a useful resource to the mind-mapping world. If you disagree with the terminology, please confine discussion about which maps are best or whether "mind maps" should be used to describe only Buzan-style mind maps here: [[Talk:Map_wars|the discussion tab of the Map wars page]].
 +
----

Mind-mapping.org has a good capability for selecting software by map type and operating system (click on the 'Refine software list' tab at the top right of its web page), and shows the price.  Unfortunately, it doesn't allow you to filter on price or choose to see only the free ones.  This article is therefore a quick list to current software that is free or has a free option.  It excludes applications that have a time limit on their operation, for example, free trial software or web applications.

"Free" here is as in beer, not in freedom, though some of the software listed is open source, so is free in both senses.
+
Below is an outline of the content of this area of WikIT.  It is not just a list of possibilities.  Follow the '''More...''' and other links to find ideas and explanations of how to use mind maps for these actions yourself.

Of course a pencil and paper is always free - or almost.
+
Alternatively you can navigate by a mind map like the one at the head of this page: The following two links open an active mind map in a separate browser window.  This map has expanding branches and hyperlinks to other parts of WikIT.

== Concept maps ==
+
For you as [[Personal uses of mind maps|an individual]], WikIT describes how information mapping can be used for goal setting, for deep and fresh analysis of something you know well, self-study, in your personal projects, for planning, events (even your [[life]]), for [[time management]], in [[extending knowledge]], for organizing personal records and documents, and learning new thinking methods and using them.
The term 'Concept maps' is used rather loosely in this list to mean 'anything can connect to anything' in contrast with mind maps where there is a strong hierarchy and central topic.  For a proper definition please refer to the WikIT article on [[Concept maps]], [[How to make a concept map]] and [[Concept maps or mind maps? the choice]].

'''<nowiki>*</nowiki>'''Some people find navigating the '''Cmap''' site idiosycratic -- the interface is a little unusual -- so here's the skinny:

:*Under most of the concept boxes there's a small icon

:*hover over that and you will see a text link just below

:*click on it.

:*Some links are to other very similar looking Cmaps, so you may think that it's linked back to the same page.  It hasn't.

:*Still lost, here to speed you on your way is the [http://cmap.ihmc.us/download/ download link for Cmap].

'''[[Personal uses of mind maps|More...]]'''
These are programs that allow you to build programs that make information maps.  One stage removed from the end-user software that most visual thinkers use.  Because they are flexible, picking one representative screenshot is impossible.  It is best to visit the sites to see the full scope of some of these, which can make an amazing range of map types.

These applications can be used to make mind maps and concept maps, but they are mostly equipped to make more general diagrams and do not have features that support mind or concept maps specifically.

Mind maps can be used to summarize books as you read (or re-read) them if you wish to retain the material, refer back to it later or write a review. They can also be used when organizing book lists.

'''<nowiki>*</nowiki>'''Some people find navigating the '''Cmap''' site idiosycratic -- the interface is a little unusual -- so here's the skinny:

:*Under most of the concept boxes there's a small icon

:*click on it.

:*Some links are to other very similar looking Cmaps, so you may think that it's linked back to the same page.  It hasn't.

== Development platforms for map forms ==

These are programs that allow you to build programs that make information maps.  One stage removed from the end-user software that most visual thinkers use.  Because they are flexible, picking one representative screenshot is impossible.  It is best to visit the sites to see the full scope of some of these, which can make an amazing range of map types.

Uses of mind mapping

This is a high-level view of the material in WikIT that covers different ways that all the types of information maps can be used – how to use them, which specific map types have advantages for which uses, tips and tricks.

An important note on terminology: Most of the references below are to “mind maps” and WikIT adopts the prevalent use of this term. The Information Maps area of WikIT is intended to be a useful resource to the mind-mapping world. If you disagree with the terminology, please confine discussion about which maps are best or whether “mind maps” should be used to describe only Buzan-style mind maps here: the discussion tab of the Map wars page.

Below is an outline of the content of this area of WikIT. It is not just a list of possibilities. Follow the More… and other links to find ideas and explanations of how to use mind maps for these actions yourself.

Alternatively you can navigate by a mind map like the one at the head of this page: The following two links open an active mind map in a separate browser window. This map has expanding branches and hyperlinks to other parts of WikIT.

Personal uses of mind maps[edit]

For you as an individual, WikIT describes how information mapping can be used for goal setting, for deep and fresh analysis of something you know well, self-study, in your personal projects, for planning, events (even your life), for time management, in extending knowledge, for organizing personal records and documents, and learning new thinking methods and using them.

Books and mind maps[edit]

Mind maps can be used to summarize books as you read (or re-read) them if you wish to retain the material, refer back to it later or write a review. They can also be used when organizing book lists.

Business uses of mind maps[edit]

Although mind maps and concept maps were first conceived as educational tools, their use has spread to businesses worldwide.

  • Mind maps are a valuable tool in many phases of business analysis and consulting.
  • They can help in collaboration with others, though you should ensure that all parties are sympathetic to visual thinking, or at least are prepared to give it a try.
  • Decision making can be enhanced by a period spent mapping out factors involved and other considerations.
  • They can be used while planning events.
  • Human Resources departments can make use of them when planning staff training, recruitment and induction programs.
  • They are a useful tool for management in many tasks described in WikIT, including…
  • Strategic planning,
  • Preparations for detailed business plans,
  • Goal setting,
  • Problem solving,
  • Prioritizing issues,
  • Contract management,
  • Organizing Board, committee and working party roles,
  • Setting up Management dashboards for quick access to vital information,
  • Planning, writing and reviewing policies, values and procedures,
  • Planning and evaluating marketing materials, exercises and alternatives,
  • Considering lessons learned,
  • Preparing and administering meetings, conducting them, and minuting.
  • Preparing for negotiation and efter-the-event analysis.
  • Planning is a very large area in which mind mapping is useful, and is covered under the individual planning topics.
  • Planning, preparing and giving presentations.
  • Project management.
  • Organizing seminars.
  • In the area of training, they can be used for planning courses and presenting material. Participants can extend their understanding and improve note taking with mind maps.
  • Planning and re-organizing web sites can be helped with mind maps.

Enhancing creativity with mind maps[edit]

Many people find that barriers to creativity fall when using mind maps – you can spark new ideas for yourself (ideatation) and conduct group brainstorming.

Mind and concept maps in formal education[edit]

Suggestions for students (mind maps: Buzan) and pedagogic techniques (concept maps: Novak, et al) is where mind and concept mapping both began – if we ignore historical, and very isolated, early use[1] of similar techniques. These two forms of information mapping are used to help students memorize new material, understand it and show their comprehension.

Maps are used for note taking, collaboration in group projects, preparing papers, revision, and supporting teaching.

Managing information with mind maps[edit]

For both people used to mind maps, and those who are not, managing information with mind maps can be a revelation to those who have not tried it.

A mind map can be used as an information repository to organize material:

  • for learning,
  • for future reference,
  • for document management and creating indexes to documents,
  • for organizing web links,
  • as a file organizer with links to the files,
  • for organizing information feeds.
