What they say[edit]

“Ecco Pro was a program that when it was introduced in the 1990’s defied categorization. It was a PIM program, no, it was a note taking program, no it was a project manager, no it was an outliner, no, maybe an organizer. The truth is Ecco was all of those things and more and that was probably the downfall of the program. Ecco was so customizable that each user could tailor it to fit the way they work. You could change almost everything with this program and have your information displayed any way you wanted.”

Observations[edit]

Much loved in its time, and still with an active support community.

Jim Chisholm wrote to tell me that ECCO is available free and user-supported at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ecco_pro. Installation files are available there also http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ecco_pro/files/. He tells me that a new ‘add-in’ has been developed called EccoExt (also FREE at at ecco_pro) that adds features and functionality that is truly bringing ECCO up to date. Things like Y2K tickler problem resolved, full mouse wheel support, lots of copying options to maintain your outline hierarchy, etc.

Both groups are active and worth a visit, but I hear that the ecco_pro group is where the development is.

Jim tells me there’s also a source for a single directory (ie. ready for USB mode) install of ECCO available for free at www.eccoTools.com. So you can now run ECCO straight from a USB stick without having to install it on the host machine.

Amazing, isn’t it, that an abandoned product can have such life?

There’s an overview at http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkontherun/2004/11/memory_lane_ecc.html#more

Finally ECCO is also available for download here, but they want US$10 http://www.compusol.org/ecco/
