What they say[edit]

“Using XMind/XMind Pro with XMind.net’s sharing service is a revolutionary way to enable both team brainstorming and personal mind mapping. With this major upgrade, we bring Web 2.0 concepts on community sharing into a popular desktop application. Our new Gantt chart view is a must for both junior and senior project managers. You’ll find many more pleasant surprises with the new XMind product family.

XMind is now free software. This means when you want to use a fishbone in a spreadsheet, or put your photos and media files into a mind map, or reuse your Freemind / MindManager files, you’re free to use XMind. You can even add XMind/XMind Pro as plug-ins into your Eclipse-based enterprise environment.

XMind.net is the best place to share your ideas and thoughts with the world. Adding an embedded viewer into your blog will enable more people to visualize and learn from your ideas. If you want to share privately, or do a brainstorm with selected friends, just upgrade to XMind Pro.

Double-clicking works for creation and editing anywhere. Drag-and-dropping works for reorganizing, marking, map-shot, and adding attachments. It’s our design philosophy. Explode your ideas without any interrupt. Write inline notes and record audio notes in your meeting minutes. You can even search your topic in Google and drag images back without leaving the working window.

With XMind Pro, there’s no capital investment, no vendor lock-in, and no risk. Priced at only $49.00/year or $6.00/month. XMind Pro subscribers have full access to all updates, free online support, and all pro features, including privately sharing, inline presentation, exporting to PDF/Word/Powerpoint, Gantt charts with task topics, and much more.”

Observations[edit]

This is based on the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (which is open source). In November 2008 XMind itself went open source, with a subscription option that provides more functionality. This can now be used as a desktop application and as a web-based sharing service. At Share.XMind.net you can publish mind maps online. XMind Pro subscribers can make these maps private. Embed online maps in blogs or websites.

The third image above illustrates the flexibility of Xmind – name another mind mapping package that can do something like that – please let me know if you can.
