You can make new Topicscapes in several ways:

  1. From the File menu, choose 'New Topicscape'. You will then provide a name, and a topic with that name will appear. Build the Topicscape by importing files, folders and structures of folders, or by adding new topics as you plan a project, think through a problem or organize some computer files.
  2. If there is a problem with a 3DT file (a Topicscape database) you may receive a warning panel -- choose the New Topicscape option.
  3. From the File menu, choose the Import item, then 'Folder to make new Topicscape'. If the folder has children, grandchildren etc., these will build an initial Topic structure. You will be asked to name the Topicscape -- the name will be used for the folder to contain files for the Topicscape, the database file (.3DT) for the Topicscape and the first topic (the "Home topic"). You will also have to choose whether you want to copy the folders and files to the new Topicscape's folder, move them instead, or have the occurrences made with links, so that the files themselves remain where they are, with no copies made. 'Move' is recommended.
  4. From the File menu, choose the Import item, then choose 'Structured text' and New Topicscape' from the panel shown. A text file following simple outline format numbering will be translated into a Topicscape that follows the outline's structure. See Structured text file -- export and re-import, round trip.
  5. From the File menu, choose the Import item, then choose 'XML to new Topicscape' from the panel shown. This allows you to select importing from other products, like MindManager, FreeMind or PersonalBrain. For example, a Brain's structure and attached files exported to an "XML" file by PersonalBrain can be made into a Topicscape that follows the original structure. See Importing from PersonalBrain.

In a new Topicscape, the first topic you make is permanently marked as the 'Home' topic. It cannot be deleted inside the Topicscape. Of course you can delete the whole Topicscape. You can rename the Home topic, but that will not cause the Topicscape itself to be renamed.

A fixed link in Favorites allows you to return to the Home topic quickly whenever you like.
