There are some shortcuts to making new topics quickly and defining at the same time what type of relationship they are to have to the topic that you associate them with.
If you double-click on the field this pops up New Topic panel for you to make a new floating topic. By default, if you drop the red floating topic on another topic, it will become a child, but you can change the relationship with the radio button.
If a topic in the Map or 'Scape (not an entry in the Lists) is selected: Alt+P Make a floating topic (it defaults to parent of the topic on which you drop it, but you can change the relationship with the radio button when you have added the name). Alt+C Make a floating topic (it defaults to child). Alt+L Make a floating topic (it defaults to LA). Tab Move to the next topic at the level of the topic now selected. Shift+Tab Move to the previous topic at the level of the topic now selected. If no topic in the Map or 'Scape is selected: Alt+P Make a parent of that topic. Alt+C Make a child of that topic. Alt+L Make a loose associate of that topic. If a topic in the Hit or History List is selected, and one of the above three key combinations is pressed, Topicscape will deselect that topic, and then make a floating topic. Ctrl+N (New) acts like Alt+C. Insert Acts like Alt+C in the Map or 'Scape but makes a new occurrence in the Topic Center. Shift+Insert Acts like Alt+P in the Map or 'Scape but makes a new occurrence in the Topic Center.
Check out the Hints function in The power of the 'Create New Topics' panel - it helps to avoid making topics where you have a similar one already defined.
